RR1 – Région Sud (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France

Région Sud covers 31,700 km² and is home to around 5 million inhabitants, concentrated mainly in the metropolitan areas of Aix-Marseille, Toulon and Nice. The region is a national biodiversity hotspot, with 59% of its territory under protected status and more than 70% of France’s species recorded there.

Climate change is increasing pressures from rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, water scarcity, declining snow cover, forest fires, urban sprawl and ecosystem fragmentation, creating interconnected climate and biodiversity challenges.

Through DesirMED, the region will strengthen governance and planning for Green-Blue Infrastructure and Nature-based Solutions. Actions will support biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable land management, while helping local authorities address ecological restoration and reduce land consumption linked to urban development.
