DR4 – Split-Dalmatia County Croatia

Split-Dalmatia County covers 14,000 km², including a vast coastal and marine area, and has around 450,000 inhabitants, 80% of whom live along the coast. The region’s economy is heavily dependent on tourism, with most activities concentrated in coastal zones.

Climate change and urbanisation are increasing exposure to hazards such as heatwaves, droughts, flash floods, coastal flooding and storm surges. Areas around Split and Kaštela Bay are particularly vulnerable to sea level rise and flood risks.

Through DesirMED, the region will test Nature-based Solutions to strengthen coastal resilience, including erosion and flood protection measures, water-sensitive urban design, beach greening and afforestation, river restoration, and actions to reduce urban heat island effects while enhancing biodiversity.
