Lituania es el más grande de los tres estados bálticos. Lithuania is the largest of the three Baltic states. In the Middle Ages, it was a formidable power; the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was the largest country in Europe and, together with Poland, formed the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. However, like its neighbors, it spent centuries under the rule of foreign powers, mainly Russia, and was part of the Soviet Union until its independence in 1990, being the first Soviet republic to declare its secession. Its struggle, like that of Estonia and Latvia, was part of the peaceful "Singing Revolution."

The Lithuanian landscape is gentle and rolling, full of forests, lakes, and rivers. Its capital, Vilnius, has one of the largest and best-preserved old towns in Europe, a labyrinth of baroque streets declared a World Heritage site. A unique and fascinating place in the country is the Hill of Crosses, near the city of Šiauliai, a small hill covered by hundreds of thousands of crosses of all sizes, which has become a symbol of the faith and peaceful resistance of the Lithuanian people. Culturally, the Lithuanian language is one of the oldest and most conservative of the Indo-European family.
