RR3 – Cyprus

Cyprus is an island nation covering 9,251 km² with a population of approximately 923,000 inhabitants. Its economy relies heavily on tourism, concentrated in coastal urban areas, where increasing development and population growth place growing pressure on natural ecosystems.

The country faces significant climate challenges, including rising temperatures, more intense and frequent heatwaves, warmer seas, stronger storms and increasing humidity. Coastal erosion, habitat degradation, pollution and the spread of non-native species further threaten marine and coastal biodiversity.

Through DesirMED, Cyprus will focus on the urban–coastal interface, promoting blue-green Nature-based Solutions to enhance climate resilience. The project will support their wider adoption through integrated governance approaches and improved management of coastal climate risks.
