Ukraine is the second-largest country in Europe, located in the east of the continent. It is known as the "breadbasket of Europe" for its vast and extremely fertile black earth plains (chernozem), which make it one of the world's largest grain producers. Its history is complex, marked by the struggle to maintain its identity against neighboring powers, especially Russia. It was one of the founding republics of the Soviet Union and suffered enormously under its rule, including a man-made famine (the Holodomor) and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. In 1991, it declared its independence.

In recent history, Ukraine has once again become the center of global attention. Following the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, the country suffered a full-scale invasion by Russia in February 2022, leading to a devastating war and a severe humanitarian crisis. Despite the war, the spirit of the Ukrainian people has inspired the world. Its capital is Kyiv, one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Eastern Europe, famous for its golden-domed monasteries.
