Burundi

馃嚜馃嚫ESPA脩OL (ESPA脩A)

ENGLISH (WORLD)

Burundi is a small, landlocked country in the heart of Africa, in the Great Lakes region. Its nickname, "the Heart of Africa," is due to its geographical location, but also to the warmth of its people. The landscape is dominated by hills and mountains, giving it another nickname: "the land of a thousand hills." It shares the immense Lake Tanganyika with its neighbors, which functions as an inland coast and is the world's second-deepest and second-oldest freshwater lake.

Its recent history has been marked by ethnic tensions and conflicts, mainly between the Hutu and Tutsi groups, and by considerable political instability. However, the country strives for peace and reconciliation. Culturally, Burundi is famous for the Royal Drummers of Burundi, whose spectacular and energetic percussion performances have been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. A curiosity, similar to Bolivia, is that it changed its capital: in 2019, the political capital was moved from the bustling Bujumbura, which remains the economic capital, to the city of Gitega, in the center of the country.
