Paraguay es un país sin salida al mar situado en el corazón de Sudamérica. Su geografía está claramente dividida en dos por el río Paraguay: al este, una región húmeda y boscosa donde vive la mayoría de la población; y al oeste, el Chaco, una vasta llanura semiárida y poco poblada. Una de las características más singulares de Paraguay es su bilingüismo: el español y el guaraní son ambos idiomas oficiales y hablados por la gran mayoría de la población, un caso único de bilingüismo a nivel nacional en América.

Históricamente, la región fue famosa por las misiones jesuíticas, pueblos fundados en los siglos XVII y XVIII para evangelizar a los guaraníes, que alcanzaron un desarrollo social y económico impresionante. Sus ruinas son hoy Patrimonio de la Humanidad. La historia moderna del país está marcada por dos grandes guerras: la Guerra de la Triple Alianza en el siglo XIX, que fue devastadora, y la Guerra del Chaco en el siglo XX. Su capital es Asunción, una de las ciudades más antiguas de Sudamérica, y el país es famoso por su chipa (pan de queso y almidón de mandioca) y por la represa de Itaipú, una de las mayores del mundo.

Paraguay is a landlocked country located in the heart of South America. Its geography is clearly divided in two by the Paraguay River: to the east, a humid and forested region where most of the population lives; and to the west, the Chaco, a vast, semi-arid, and sparsely populated plain. One of Paraguay's most unique features is its bilingualism: Spanish and Guaraní are both official languages and spoken by the vast majority of the population, a unique case of nationwide bilingualism in the Americas.

Historically, the region was famous for the Jesuit Missions, towns founded in the 17th and 18th centuries to evangelize the Guaraní people, which achieved impressive social and economic development. Their ruins are now a World Heritage site. The country's modern history is marked by two major wars: the devastating War of the Triple Alliance in the 19th century, and the Chaco War in the 20th century. Its capital is Asunción, one of the oldest cities in South America, and the country is famous for its chipa (a cheese and cassava starch bread) and the Itaipu Dam, one of the largest in the world.
