Libya is a vast country in North Africa, with a long coastline on the Mediterranean Sea. Over 90% of its territory is covered by the Sahara Desert, which has concentrated the vast majority of its population in the coastal strip. Historically, it was home to some of the most prosperous Greek and Roman cities outside of Italy. Its greatest archaeological treasure is Leptis Magna, an incredibly well-preserved Roman port and a UNESCO World Heritage site, which rivaled Rome itself in grandeur.

Libya's modern history is dominated by the figure of Muammar Gaddafi, who ruled the country for 42 years after a coup in 1969. His regime ended abruptly with the 2011 civil war, part of the Arab Spring. Since then, the country has been mired in deep instability and conflict, with rival governments and the intervention of foreign powers. Libya's economy is almost entirely dependent on its huge oil reserves, the largest in Africa, whose production has been constantly disrupted by instability. Its capital is Tripoli.
